John Holt, a major assembly and trading company, in partnership with visiting experts from Yamaha Japan, has begun the training and re-training of artisans on the repair and maintenance of Yamaha outboard engines commonly used for fishing and other activities in Nigeria.
This is to effectively give the artisans a direct insight into the repair and maintenance of these engines for the promotion of durability and sustainability among Nigerian fishermen and other users.
The training programme in conjunction with the Lagos State Agricultural Inputs Supply Authority (LAISA) was fashioned out specifically for artisans in all the geo-political areas of Lagos state as a starting point.
The programme which commenced at the Lekki Local Council Development Area, Lekki and the Badagry West Local Council Development Area attracted participants drawn from the area predominantly dominated by fishermen.
According to Mr. George Ogedengbe, National Service Manager, John Holt, the training exercise is the commencement of a larger scheme being packaged by the company and LAISA for enhanced skill acquisition of artisans in the state.
Advising the artisans to open up their minds for knowledge acquisition, Ogedengbe pointed out that they should be environmentally friendly by disposing their used fuel through the help of government officials noting that Yamaha is known for being a friend of the environment in manufacturing activities.
Moukandasi Olaitan Ogidan, Chairman, Lekki Local Council Development Area commended the efforts of John Holt and LAISA for the conceptualization of the programme, noting that fishing is the major occupation of the people of the area.
He explained that his administration has mapped out plans to invest heavily in the procurement of the Yamaha outboard engines for fishermen in the area to empower them for optimum performance, pointing out that the local council is discussing with some banks on financing options for the scheme.
